Stowe is the third highest snowfall area in the East. Venturing towards I-89 can get you a cheaper room and it’s only a few miles from the town center.Ī few words on the Snow at Stowe Mountain Resort All that charm comes with a price in-town lodging can be expensive. For singles and couples, there’s ample nightlife and dining and Stowe is family friendly (see: Von Trapp, Family). Local ordinances prevent businesses from placing garish signage and advertisements around town. The town covered in the snow smacks of sleigh rides and Robert Frost poems. Neat wooden buildings and steeples have a pleasant duopoly on the place. Stowe is the picture perfect representation of a New England mountain town. And unlike the movie, there are no Nazis here.

The family still operates the lodge, a splendid spread that looks the part. Many experience skiers and snowboarders like the fact that Stowe’s beginner terrain tends to be toward the peripherals of the mountain giving newbies a good place to learn away from the stiffer slopes.įact of the day: Stowe is home to the Von Trapp Family Lodge, which inspired The Sound of Music. But long lift lines aren’t as prevalent as they once were, as Stowe has invested in three high speed quad chairs and a high speed gondola to the mountain’s summit.Ībout 60% of the mountain is composed of intermediate terrain with the rest of the place well suited to the beginners and experts. Stowe can get crowded on the weekends, as it’s close enough to Boston (3 hours away) that many of this city’s wonderful people are more than willing to make the weekend trip. Like Jay Peak, the glade skiing and boarding is excellent and absolutely wonderful to hone your turns and reflexes amongst. As far as the east coast goes, that means the highest point of the ski area is as high as many peaks get at 4,395 feet above sea level. We had a great experience as a family here.Stowe Mountain Resort is situated on the eastern slope of Vermont’s highest peak, Mt. Overall, I would not hesitate to come back to Stowe. And the bathrooms smelled terrible in that lodge. The Spruce Lodge is very nice, but the Mansfield Lodge is old and outdated. They were exhausted at that point (and that happened to be the day the Gondola closed right when we got there!)Īlso, the Mansfield Lodge needs some updating. And from Sunrise or Four Runner Quad to the Gondola, our kids had to walk at least 5-10minutes. I saw a lot of people getting stuck going to Sunrise lift from any directions. For a snowboarder (and the little kids on skis) it was a bit frustrating.

The only complaints about the mountain was that there were a lot of flat areas. Even later when I had to stop by guest service for a question, she went above and beyond to help me.

The one day I had to get a code for free parking (because we had 4 people in the car), the parking attendant stayed with me to make sure I entered everything in correctly. I asked one lady at the ticket counter and she was not helpful, but other employees offered as much info as they could. One day, most lifts were closed due to wind. But the lift operators, scanners were very nice. Maybe the Gondola twice took us about 10minutes to get on.

Because we avoided weekends, we also avoided any terrible lines.

Conditions were awesome! Views from the Gondola and Four Runner Quad were excellent on a sunny day. My family and I came here right after Stowe had a season record high snowfall.
